A Busy and Exciting Term in Penclawdd Sharks!

What a fantastic term we have had in class! We have worked hard across all areas of the curriculum and enjoyed lots of exciting learning experiences. Here are some of the highlights from our term.

Literacy

In Literacy, we have been learning about discussion writing. We explored the features of this text type, including how to present balanced arguments, use facts to support our ideas and write clear conclusions.

We used our learning about the Romans to write a discussion text answering the question: "Did the Romans have a positive impact on life in Britain?" We thought carefully about both sides of the argument. They considered the Romans' influence on roads, towns and technology, as well as the effects of invasion and conflict.

Numeracy

This term, our Numeracy work has focused on several important areas.

We have developed our understanding of money, learning to recognise coins and notes, make different amounts and work out change through a range of practical activities.

The children have also been learning to tell the time, reading both analogue and digital clocks. We also learnt how to tell the time using AM and PM and started to use the 24 hour clock.

In Geometry, we explored the properties of 2D and 3D shapes, identifying faces, edges and vertices, as well as sorting and describing shapes using mathematical vocabulary.

Topic

Our topic this half term has been The Romans, and the children have thoroughly enjoyed becoming historians!

We learned about the growth of the Roman Empire, life as a Roman soldier, the development of Roman towns and where the Romans fit within historical timelines. The children discovered how Roman Britain changed over time and explored the lasting impact the Romans had on the country.

One of our favourite activities was making our own Roman shields. We then used them to march like Roman soldiers on a visit to an ancient Celtic hill fort, helping us imagine what life may have been like during Roman times.

We also enjoyed an exciting trip to Caerleon Roman Museum, where we explored the fascinating remains of Roman Britain. We visited the impressive amphitheatre, saw the remains of the Roman baths and discovered what life was like for soldiers in the barracks. The visit brought our classroom learning to life and gave us a real insight into the Roman world.

 

Alongside our classroom learning, we have enjoyed several special events this term.

Sports Day was a fantastic success, with all children showing determination, teamwork and excellent sportsmanship throughout the activities.

Some also took part in our school's World Cup Football Tournament. The children represented their teams brilliantly, demonstrating great effort, teamwork and enthusiasm throughout the competition.
