Summer 1 2026
We have had a very busy and exciting time in class, with lots of fantastic learning across all areas.
Literacy
In Literacy, we have been reading the story The King Who Banned the Dark by Emily Haworth-Booth. We really enjoyed exploring the characters and thinking about how they felt, especially the King and how his actions affected others.
We talked about why darkness is important as well as light, and we shared our ideas about feelings such as fear and bravery. We also practised describing characters using interesting vocabulary.
To link with our topic on light, we wrote free-verse poems about the sun. We used their imagination to describe how the sun looks, feels, and helps the world. There were some beautiful ideas, including comparisons to fire, gold, and warmth spreading across the sky!

Numeracy
We have been learning about:
- Fractions – finding halves, quarters and thirds of shapes and numbers
- Decimals – understanding tenths and how they link to fractions
- Mass – weighing objects using grams and kilograms
We have used practical activities, such as weighing classroom items and comparing their weight. We also practised solving problems and explaining our thinking. We have become much more confident in recognising fractions and understanding how numbers can be split into equal parts.
Science and Technology
Our Science topic has been all about light. We discovered:
- There are different light sources, such as the sun, torches and lamps
- Shadows are created when an object blocks light
- Shadows can change size depending on the position of the light
We experimented with making shadows using classroom objects. We loved investigating how moving the light source closer or further away changed the shadow shape and size!
Expressive Arts
We were very proud to take part in our art exhibition!
We created our own versions of Starry Night inspired by Vincent van Gogh. We also created Landscape-style paintings influenced by Kyffin Williams as well as creative and colourful self-portraits
The artwork showed fantastic effort, creativity and attention to detail. It was wonderful to see the children express themselves in so many different ways. Thank you everyone who supported our exhibition.

Health and Well-being
In Health and Well-being we successfully completed our swimming lessons, building confidence in the water and developing important skills. We have also been taking part in summer athletics, including running, jumping and throwing activities
Everyone showed great determination, teamwork and encouragement for one another.
Humanities
In Humanities, we have been learning about wildlife in our local area.
We explored different animals and habitats near our school. We then worked out what we need to create a wildlife-friendly class garden, such as plants, water, shelter and food sources for animals.
We also enjoyed two exciting trips to Swansea Community Farm and Big Meadow Farm with our friends from Portmead Primary School
These visits helped us see real-life animals, understand how to care for nature and learn about the type of food we can grow locally. We had a fantastic time learning outdoors!
We were also visited by Cerys from The Size of Wales who helped teach us about deforestation and the importance of protecting the rainforests.

Overall, it has been a brilliant half term full of creativity, curiosity and teamwork. We are very proud of all the children’s hard work and enthusiasm.
