Autumn
Activity 1 - Writing Task
Poetry Task – “Through a Child’s Eyes”
Write a poem that shows what it might have been like to be a child in wartime Britain.
- You could describe an air raid, leaving home as an evacuee, or the kindness of strangers.
- Use imagery, repetition, and powerful verbs/adjectives.
- Try to capture feelings of fear, hope, and belonging.
Activity 2 - Reading Task
Login to HWB and click on the Britannica School App. Search for Anne Frank and read about her life. Answer the following questions.
🔍 Understanding & Inference
- Why do you think Anne chose to write her diary to an imaginary friend called “Kitty”?
- How might life in the Annex have affected the way Anne thought and felt about her family?
- What clues in the article show that Anne was hopeful even in difficult times?
- Why do you think the Franks trusted certain people to help them, even though it was very risky?
- How do you think Anne’s relationship with her diary helped her cope with hiding?
📖 Making Connections
- What are some similarities between Anne’s dreams for the future and your own?
- How is Anne’s story different from how most children grow up today?
- What lessons about kindness and bravery can we learn from the people who helped the families in hiding?
- What does Anne’s story tell us about how ordinary people were affected by the war?
- Why do you think the diary became more powerful than just a history book about the Holocaust?
🌍 Reflection & Evaluation
- If you could ask Anne one question about her time in hiding, what would it be and why?
- Do you think you would have managed to keep hopeful like Anne if you were in the Annex? Explain your answer.
- How would the world be different if Anne had survived the war and become a writer?
- Why do you think it is important to keep reading Anne’s diary today, even though the events happened over 75 years ago?
- If you had to explain Anne Frank’s story to someone your age who had never heard of her, what three words would you choose, and why?
Activity 3 - Oracy Task
Interview with the Past
Task:
- Imagine you have travelled back to the 1940s. You are going to record (or rehearse and perform aloud at home) an interview with a WWII child.
- Prepare 3–5 questions you would ask them (e.g. “What was the hardest part about leaving home?”, “Who looked after you when you were evacuated?”).
- Then, practise performing both roles — the interviewer and the child.
- Try to make the child’s answers detailed, showing conflict, compassion, and belonging.
Success criteria:
- Clear, confident speaking voice.
- Expressive tone to show feelings.
- Imaginative, thoughtful answers.
Extension: Record your interview on a phone/tablet (if possible) and share on Seesaw.
Activity 4 - Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar
Part 1: Punctuation
Add the missing punctuation to the sentences below. Remember to include capital letters, full stops, commas, speech marks, and apostrophes where needed.
- anne frank kept a diary every day in hiding
- she said i hope i will be able to write something great one day
- the helpers brought food clothes and news from outside to the annex
- on her thirteenth birthday anne received a red-checked diary
- the family had to be quiet during the day or they would be discovered
Part 2: Capital Letters
Correct the mistakes in capital letters:
- anne frank was born in frankfurt, germany.
- the family went into hiding in amsterdam.
- her diary is called the diary of anne frank.
- poppies are worn on remembrance day.
Part 3: Spelling
One word is spelled correctly. Copy the correct spelling, and then use it in a sentence:
- couragous / courageous / courageus
- remembrance / remembarance / remembrence
- familly / family / fammily
- annex / anex / annnex
- diary / diarry / dieary
- helpers / helpres / helprs
Part 4: Grammar – Choose the Correct Word
- Anne (was / were) only thirteen when she started her diary.
- The helpers (bring / brought) food and news to the Secret Annex.
- She wrote (quiet / quietly) so she would not be heard.
- The diary (tell / tells) the story of her life in hiding.
Activity 5 - Handwriting

Activity 1 - Writing
Poetry Task – “Across the Ocean, Under the Dragon”
Write a poem that compares the sights, sounds, and feelings of Mexico and Wales. You could focus on the contrast between the landscapes (mountains and coastlines) or the vibrant traditions (Dia de los Muertos vs. The Eisteddfod).
- Imagery: Describe the "fiery spice of a taco" vs. the "warmth of a Welsh cake," or the "golden heat of the Yucatan" vs. the "misty greens of Snowdonia."
- Techniques: Use personification, metaphors, and powerful adjectives.
- Focus: Try to capture feelings of identity, pride, and wonder.
Activity 2 - Reading
📖 Reading Stimulus: The Silver Link
Read the text below to find the answers for your Reading Task.
The Great Migration
In the 1820s, the silver mines in Pachuca and Real del Monte, Mexico, were in desperate need of experts. Thousands of miles away, miners in the UK—including many from the coal valleys of Wales—were known as the best in the world. Despite the dangerous, months-long journey across the Atlantic Ocean, hundreds of men left their homes. They travelled to the high, misty mountains of the Sierra Madre to start a new life, bringing their heavy machinery, their families, and their unique traditions to a land that looked very different from the ones they left behind.
A Mix of Cultures
Life in the Mexican mining "barrios" became a fascinating blend of cultures. The British miners missed their home comforts, so they introduced the Pasty—a pastry filled with meat and potatoes that was easy to carry down into a mine. The Mexican locals loved them but added their own twist, filling them with spicy chilies and local ingredients; these are still sold today as "Pastes." On their days off, the miners set up goalposts and played football. This was the very first time the sport was played in Mexico, and it eventually grew to become the country's national obsession.
Landscape and Legacy
Although Mexico is famous for its heat, the mining towns were located high up in the mountains where it was often cool and foggy, much like the landscape of North Wales. Today, you can still see the tall stone engine houses that look exactly like those found in British mining villages. The "Little Cornwall" of Mexico serves as a reminder of a time when two very different nations were joined together by silver, hard work, and a shared love for community and sport.
🔍 Understanding & Inference
- The Journey: Why do you think miners were willing to travel thousands of miles by ship to the mountains of Mexico?
- The Recipe Swap: Miners brought "Pasties" to Mexico. Today, they are called "Pastes." Based on the text, how did the recipe change?
- First Impressions: How do you think the local Mexican people felt when they first saw these miners arrive with strange machinery and a different language?
- The Beautiful Game: What does the fact that football is now Mexico’s most popular sport tell us about the impact of these miners?
📖 Making Connections
- Mining Life: Both countries have a history of mining. List two ways you think life for a mining family would be similar in both Wales and Mexico.
- National Symbols: Both countries have strong symbols (The Eagle and the Dragon). Why is having a national symbol important for a country’s identity?
- The Landscape: The text mentions the mountains were "cool and foggy." How does this compare to your image of what Mexico usually looks like?
🌍 Reflection & Evaluation
- If you could visit one of these old mining towns today, what would you want to see most?
- Why is it important to learn about people who moved away from their home countries in the past?
- Three-Word Summary: Choose three words to describe the link between Wales and Mexico and explain why you chose them.
Activity 3 - Oracy
The Cultural Exchange
Task: Imagine you are a travel vlogger. You are interviewing a person who has just moved from Mexico to Wales (or vice versa).
- Prepare 3–5 questions: (e.g., “What was the biggest surprise when you first saw the Welsh rain?”, “What do you miss most about the markets in Mexico?”).
- Perform both roles: The interviewer and the traveller.
- Focus: Use a confident voice and show curiosity and respect for both cultures.
Activity 4 - Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar
Part 1: Punctuation - Add the missing punctuation (capitals, full stops, commas, and apostrophes)
- mexico is a country in north america and its capital is mexico city
- the welsh flag has a red dragon on a green and white background
- have you ever tried traditional dishes like tacos enchiladas or burritos
- snowdonia which is called eryri in welsh is the highest mountain range in wales
- the aztecs built amazing temples long ago didnt they
Part 2: Capital Letters - Correct the mistakes
- the official language of mexico is spanish.
- many people in wales speak welsh, which is one of the oldest languages in europe.
- mount snowdon is located in north wales.
- every november, mexicans celebrate the day of the dead.
Part 3: Spelling - Copy the correct spelling and use it in a sentence
- mowntain / mountain / mountane
- tradition / tradision / tradishen
- bewtiful / beautiful / beatiful
- langwage / language / langwidge
- valley / vally / vallie
- culture / culcher / cultur
Activity 5 - Handwriting
Task: Carefully copy the text below on to lined paper.
- Focus: Ensure your ascenders (t, l, k, b, h) and descenders (j, g, y, p, q) are clear and do not touch the lines above or below.
- Challenge: Try to use fully joined-up (cursive) script for the entire passage.
In the heart of Western Europe lies Wales, a land of mist-covered mountains and ancient, rugged coastlines. It is a place where the air smells of salt spray and damp earth, and where the history of the Red Dragon is carved into the stones of medieval castles. From the peaks of Eryri to the bustling streets of Cardiff, the melodic sound of the Welsh language echoes through the green valleys, carrying stories of poets and singers from long ago.
Thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean, Mexico glows under a golden sun. It is a vibrant land of sprawling deserts, dense tropical jungles, and the crumbling stone pyramids of the Maya and Aztecs. In the busy plazas, the air is filled with the scent of roasted corn and spicy chillies, while the bright colours of papel picado banners flutter in the breeze. Though their landscapes are different, both Wales and Mexico share a deep pride in their roots, their music, and their people.
