Autumn 1 2025

What a Fantastic First Half Term! 🎉

We’ve had such a wonderful start to Year 6! It’s been a busy half term full of learning, laughter, and new challenges. Everyone has worked so hard and shown amazing enthusiasm in everything we’ve done. From diving into exciting lessons to taking part in fun activities, it’s been brilliant to see how much we’ve already achieved together.

Literacy ✨
In Literacy, we’ve been diving into the magical world of The Dreamgiver! This beautiful short film has sparked our imaginations and inspired us to write our own dream-themed poems and stories about our very own dreamgivers. We’ve explored how to make our writing more powerful by using a thesaurus to find ambitious vocabulary and by experimenting with different ways to start our sentences. We’ve also learned how to hook our readers right from the beginning — using rhetorical questions and vivid descriptions to make our openings truly shine. Our writing has been full of creativity, emotion, and a touch of dreamlike magic!

In Welsh, we’ve been enjoying reading Nici a Cris: Canu yn y Côr. Through the story, we’ve been learning and practising a range of new sentence patterns to help us become more confident Welsh speakers. We also celebrated Shwmae Day in style! As part of the day, we created a special video in our local community to inspire others to say “Shwmae” and have a go at using Welsh too. It was fantastic to share our enthusiasm for the language and spread a bit of Cymraeg pride!

Maths ➕➖✖️➗
In Maths this half term, we’ve been building our confidence and skills in place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We’ve tackled lots of tricky challenges and enjoyed developing our problem-solving and reasoning skills along the way. Everyone has been working hard to explain their thinking clearly and find different strategies to solve problems. It’s been great to see how our mathematical minds have grown — we’re becoming real Year 6 problem-solvers!

Science & Technology ⚡
In Science and Technology, we’ve been getting hands-on with electrical circuits! We’ve enjoyed experimenting to find out how circuits work and discovering what’s needed to make a bulb light up. We’ve also been learning the scientific symbols used to draw electrical circuits and have become much more confident at using them in our diagrams. It’s been exciting to see our knowledge grow with each experiment, and we can’t wait to carry out even more investigations after half term!

Also, we’ve been exploring the fascinating world of codebreaking and coding! We discovered how coding played a vital role during World War II and learned about the incredible work of Alan Turing, whose code-cracking skills helped to change the course of history. Inspired by his achievements, we’ve been developing our own coding skills using Scratch, creating interactive programs and experimenting with sequences, loops, and debugging. It’s been exciting to see how the logical thinking used decades ago is still so important in the technology we use today!

Humanities 🏰
Our Humanities learning this half term has been truly fascinating! We kicked off our topic with amazing visits to Cardiff Castle and the Brecon War Museum, which really helped to bring our learning about World War II to life. We took part in exciting workshops all about wartime life — exploring air raid shelters, discovering what evacuation was like for children, and learning how people lived during the war. Alongside this, we’ve been enjoying two incredible books: The Valley of Lost Secrets by Lesley Parr and Mohinder’s War by Bali Rai. Both stories have helped us understand what life was like for different people during the war and have inspired lots of thoughtful discussions in class. These experiences have really hooked us into our topic and helped us imagine what life was like for those who lived through such an important time in history.

Health & Well-being 💚
This half term, we’ve been focusing on keeping both our bodies and minds healthy. In PE, we’ve been developing our hockey skills and improving our general fitness, teamwork, and coordination. We also took part in World Mental Health Day, where we learned about the importance of looking after our emotional well-being. To celebrate, we held a special Tea and Talk Day, sharing conversations, kindness, and plenty of smiles! It’s been a fantastic way to remind ourselves how important it is to stay active, connected, and positive.
