Summer 1 2026

This term we have been very busy, planting our vegetables and flowers in our class allotment. We are already seeing the fruits of our labour with new shoots starting to sprout and our flowers growing well. Thank you everyone for your kind donations!

Literacy

This term we have been learning about explanation texts, and we have written some great pieces using our success criteria to help us. Lots of us decided to write recipes as we have been taking part in our Ready Steady Cook competition, so we had first-hand experience of following an explanation text.

Maths and Numeracy

We have been working hard to extend our knowledge of money and were able to convert units of £'s to pence and the inverse. We have completed lots of money problems requiring reasoning and using RUCSAC as a strategy.

We have been using measurements to weigh ingredients for our recipes and for planting our seeds and flowers.

We have also been improving our knowledge of 'Time' and were able to solve time problems using digital and analogue clocks.

Science

So far we have discovered the different parts of a flower and how they work together to reproduce. We know all about pollination! In class, we have also learnt about the life-cycle of mammals and amphibians and have made comparisons.

Expressive Arts /Humanities

During Local History week, we researched the life of Karl Jenkins and discovered his talent for music is renowned globally. Did you know he actually attended Penclawdd Primary just like us? We have listened to his compositions and appreciated and appraised his work. Our favourite piece is Adiemus. We looked at composition, dynamics, tempo, rhythm, melody, pulse, harmony and texture. We also looked at the emotions that his music evokes. As part of our topic Allotment we have been looking at the work of Georgia O' Keefe , an American abstract artist. We enjoyed using artistic language to describe her work and could describe her pieces, talking about

✨ Mood and Interpretation

We enjoyed sharing our work in her style at our school's art exhibition.

It has been an exciting time for Welsh politics and Year 4 and 5 have been finding out about the history of the Senedd and the voting system in our country. We know how our government works and the systems in place for voting. We are now in the process of writing our manifesto as part of our Mission and independent tasks.

P.E.

This term our focus has been athletics. We have learnt new skills and improved our throwing, running and jumping. The disciplines that we have been working hard to improve upon are high jump, long jump and shot put. We are all aiming to beat our personal bests and improve our targets.

RVE

In our recent learning, pupils have explored key aspects of Islam through a range of engaging activities. They learnt about         Eid-ul-Adha.   In addition, the children investigated Islam in Wales, looking at prayer, mosques, charity (Zakat), and community life through collaborative research tasks.

This term we also visited the Botanical Gardens for inspiration when designing our own gardens and met Emily who taught us all about different pollinators and which plants attract pollinators and which ones were deterrents against insects.
