Spring 1 2026

Croeso! We've have a smashing start to Spring! Children have truly immersed themselves into our ' Splendid Skies' topic. Take a look at what we've been up to!

LLC

This half term, we have been having a blast with all things story and space! Using picture prompts, the children have been writing their own stories, asking questions, and exploring comprehension skills. We’ve dived into the magical world of “Man on the Moon”, discovering facts and writing fact files about space. Our young astronauts have also been designing adverts to sell items at their own imaginative stalls, practicing SPaG skills along the way. In guided reading, we’ve been exploring fact and fiction, and experimenting with free verse poetry, imagining what it would be like to land on Earth as an alien!

In Welsh, the children have been using patterns like “Beth syn bod” and “Dw i'n hoffi” to express their ideas, while in French, we’ve been learning about animals and counting confidently up to 20.

Maths and Numeracy

In Year 1, we’ve been exploring addition and subtraction to 50, and have now moved on to place value, learning all about tens and ones, and comparing numbers with more than, less than, and equal to. The children are really enjoying spotting patterns and understanding how numbers fit together! In Year 2, we’ve been practising multiplication and division with 2s, 5s, and 10s, and have now started exploring statistics. The children are learning to collect and represent data using tally charts, pictograms, and block diagrams, making it fun to analyse and interpret information. We have engaged in our outdoor area to measure planet sizes, rocket sizes and comparing planet sizes.

Science and Technology

In Science and Technology, our young explorers have been busy! We’ve been investigating algorithms using spheres, practising instructional language, and bringing our ideas to life with Scratch coding.  The children have also been using data from tally charts to create and understand pictograms, linking Maths and Tech together. In our space topic, we’ve been learning all about the Moon, its phases, and astronauts’ lives, including their diet and daily routines. We’ve explored the history of space travel, from the first rockets to humans landing on the Moon, and discovered our solar system, learning about the planets, the Sun, and how they move through space.

Humanities

In Humanities, our learners have been exploring the world around us and beyond! In Swansea, we’ve discovered churches and mosques, learning about different places of worship. We’ve also been inspired by famous astronauts, creating timelines and fact files to capture their amazing achievements. Back on Earth, the children have been learning about the location of our planet and our country, linking geography with our space studies. They’ve also explored the history of space travel, understanding how humans have reached for the stars over time. We have also learnt about climate change, and discussed how we can improve the environment through recycling, electricity usage and emissions.

Health and Wellbeing

This term in Health and Wellbeing, our learners have been staying active and thinking about how to look after themselves. In PE, we’ve been exploring dance and movement, working on coordination, balance, and creativity. We’ve also been learning about healthy diets and what our bodies need to grow strong and stay well. During Children’s Mental Health Week, we’ve had important conversations about belonging, sharing, and looking out for each other, helping everyone feel valued and included. It’s been a fun and meaningful term full of activity, care, and friendship!

Expressive Arts

In Expressive Arts, our young creators have been taking space inspiration to the next level! We’ve designed constellations, made space-themed music using iPads and selected instruments, and followed a special video created by Californian NASA illustrator just for us to create our own Peter Thorpe-inspired rocket art. The children have also been exploring space-themed dance, using movement to tell stories, and discovering animations and telescope images to inspire their imagination. We have also loved learning Welsh songs and poems through Drillo.
