Headteacher News - 13.2.26

We talked about where we all ‘belong’ - we feel so lucky to have so many lovely safe, cuddly and warm places where we belong in Penclawdd Primary School

🌟 Our Wonderful, Authentic Curriculum – A Window Into Learning at PPS

All of the amazing events we’ve enjoyed this half term are part of the rich, authentic curriculum we offer here at Penclawdd Primary School. Our pupils learn through meaningful experiences, real‑life projects, community involvement, storytelling, creativity and curiosity. Every class has its own vibrant learning journey, and we are so proud of the opportunities our children have to explore, question, create and grow.

To see what each class has been up to, take a look at their half‑termly blogs. Each link gives you a window into classroom life- celebrations, activities, challenges, achievements and the smiles that make PPS such a special place.

💚 Children’s Mental Health Week – “This Is My Place” (9th–13th February)

We marked Children’s Mental Health Week with a range of thoughtful and empowering activities linked to this year’s theme: “This Is My Place.” The theme encouraged pupils to reflect on where they feel they belong and what helps them feel safe, valued and connected.

Our Minister for Health and Sport, Pippa, planned a wonderful day for the school. She began by leading an engaging assembly and then visited each class to talk about belonging and wellbeing. Every child and member of staff contributed their fingerprint to our This Is My Place” Belonging Tree, a powerful visual reminder that every member of our PPS community matters.
It was a calm, reflective and meaningful week for all.

💻 Safer Internet Day – 10th February

To celebrate Safer Internet Day, we held a whole‑school assembly focused on using AI safely and understanding how to make good choices online. Ioan, our Science, Innovation and Tech Minister, supported with the assembly and shared important reminders about being responsible digital citizens.

Across the school, pupils discussed how to stay safe online, and it was wonderful to hear even our Reception–Year 2 learners confidently explaining ways to protect themselves when using devices. A very important day—and our learners rose to the challenge brilliantly.

💕 Friends of Penclawdd Valentine’s Disco – 10th February

A huge thank‑you to our Friends of Penclawdd for hosting a fabulous Valentine’s Disco! The children had a brilliant time dancing, celebrating with friends and enjoying a lovely evening together.
FoP raised £268, which will go directly towards enhancing experiences for our pupils. We are so grateful for their continued hard work and support.

✏️ Year 6 Literacy Event at Gowerton – 11th February

Our Year 6 pupils had an inspiring visit to Gowerton School for a special storytelling workshop with Daniel Morden, the renowned Welsh storyteller and children’s writer. He captivated the children with his oral storytelling and encouraged them to unlock their imagination.

Pupils then began planning their own stories, taking inspiration from Gowerton’s motto:
“I should… I can… I shall…”
It was an unforgettable opportunity that left our pupils buzzing with ideas.

💕 Nursery Open Afternoon – 11th February

We were delighted to welcome so many families to our Nursery Open Afternoon. It was wonderful to meet new babies, toddlers and parents who are beginning their journey with PPS.
Our Head Boy and Head Girl supported the event and received many compliments for their warm, friendly welcome.
A lovely afternoon filled with smiles and excitement for the future!

❤️💚🤍 Dydd Miwsig Cymru – 13th February

We celebrated Dydd Miwsig Cymru in style! The whole school enjoyed a fantastic concert in the hall by Bronwen Lewis, who brought so much energy and joy to our day. Pupils also took part in a Welsh music quiz, and the hall was filled with a sea of red, green and white as everyone dressed in the colours of our national flag.

It was a brilliant celebration of Welsh language, music and culture—one of our favourite days of the year!

🔬 Science Club – CREST Awards After Half Term

We are delighted to announce that Science Club will be returning after half term, and some of our pupils will have the exciting opportunity to take part in the CREST Awards – a national scheme that inspires young people to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics through hands‑on, project‑based learning. It’s a fantastic way to build curiosity, resilience and a real love for STEM.

To achieve their award, children will complete 6–8 science‑based investigations, working collaboratively and developing their problem‑solving skills along the way.

These after‑school sessions will be led by Miss B alongside our Science Link Governor, Vicky Davies, and will begin on Tuesday, 24th February. A reminder that all parents of children who showed an interest have been given a QR code to complete the consent form.
