Spring Term 2026

1. Story Sequencing with Pictures

  • Purpose: Develop understanding of narrative structure and sequencing.
  • Activity:
    • Choose a familiar Welsh or English story (e.g., The Three Little Pigs).
    • Print or draw 4–6 key pictures from the story.
    • Ask the child to put them in the correct order and retell the story in their own words.
  • Skills: Speaking, listening, sequencing, vocabulary development.

2. Sound Hunt (Phonics Focus)

  • Purpose: Reinforce phonics and initial sounds.
  • Activity:
    • Pick a sound (e.g., b, m, or a Welsh sound like ll).
    • Ask the child to find 5 objects around the house starting with that sound.
    • Encourage them to say the word, write it down, and draw a picture.
  • Skills: Phonological awareness, spelling, handwriting.

3. Create a Mini Book

  • Purpose: Encourage writing and creativity.
  • Activity:
    • Fold paper to make a small booklet.
    • Child writes a short story or fact book (e.g., “My Favourite Animal”).
    • Add illustrations and a title page.
  • Skills: Writing sentences, using capital letters and full stops, creativity.

4. Listening and Following Instructions

  • Purpose: Improve listening comprehension.
  • Activity:
    • Give a series of fun instructions (e.g., “Draw a big sun in the top corner, then draw three small clouds under it”).
    • After completing, ask them to describe what they did.
  • Skills: Listening, speaking, positional language.

5. Welsh Word Challenge

  • Purpose: Build Welsh vocabulary in a fun way.
  • Activity:
    • Choose a theme (e.g., colours, animals, food).
    • Write Welsh words on cards (e.g., glas, ci, bara).
    • Hide them around the house and ask the child to find and read them aloud.
    • Bonus: Match with English word or draw a picture.
  • Skills: Reading in Welsh, word recognition, bilingual awareness.

 

Autumn Term 

1. Oracy Task – “What Can You See?” Journey Talk

Objective: Develop speaking and listening skills.

Activity:

  • Ask your child to imagine they are going on a journey (by train, bus, or car).
  • Prompt them with questions like:
    • “What do you see out of the window?”
    • “Where are you going?”
    • “What sounds can you hear?”
  • Encourage them to describe their journey using their senses to help them.
  • You can record their story or act it out with toys or props.

2. Writing Task – “My Journey Story”

Objective: Practice early writing and mark-making.

Activity:

  • Ask your child to draw a picture of their imagined journey.
  • Support them in writing a simple sentence underneath, e.g., “I saw a big dog.”
  • Use sound mats or phonics cards to help them spell words phonetically.
  • Celebrate their writing by displaying it or sharing it with family.

3. Reading Task – “Rhyme Time with Rhyming Books”

Objective: Build phonological awareness and reading confidence.

Books to Use:

  • Oi Frog! by Kes Gray
  • Shark in the Park by Nick Sharratt
  • Each Peach Pear Plum by Janet and Allan Ahlberg
  • Fox in Socks by Dr. Seuss

Activity:

  • Choose one rhyming book each day.
  • As you read, pause and let your child guess the rhyming word.
  • Play a “rhyme match” game: say a word from the book and ask your child to find a rhyming word (real or made-up!).

4. Sequencing Task – “Story Steps”

Objective: Develop comprehension and sequencing skills.

Activity:

  • Choose a rhyming story with a clear sequence (e.g., Shark in the Park).
  • Print or draw simple pictures from key moments in the story.
  • Mix them up and ask your child to put them in the correct order.
  • Encourage them to retell the story using the pictures.

5. Creative Literacy Task – “Make Your Own Rhyming Book”

Objective: Combine creativity, phonics, and storytelling.

Activity:

  • Fold paper to make a mini-book.
  • Help your child choose a theme (e.g., animals, vehicles, food).
  • On each page, write a simple rhyming sentence together, e.g., “A cat in a hat sat on a mat.”
  • Let them illustrate each page.
  • Read their book aloud together and share it with family or friends.

Maths Rec Spring Term 2026

1. Number Hunt

  • Purpose: Recognise and read numbers up to 10 (or 20 for challenge).
  • Activity:
    • Hide number cards around the house (1–10).
    • Ask your child to find them and put them in order.
    • Extension: Say a number and ask them to jump that many times.
  • Skills: Number recognition, sequencing, counting.

2. Shape Detective

  • Purpose: Identify and name 2D shapes.
  • Activity:
    • Go on a “shape hunt” around the home.
    • Find circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles in everyday objects (e.g., plates, doors).
    • Draw or take photos of what they find.
  • Skills: Shape recognition, language development, categorising.

3. Build a Tower

  • Purpose: Compare size and measure.
  • Activity:
    • Use blocks, tins, or boxes to build towers.
    • Ask: Which is tallest? Which is shortest?
    • Measure using non-standard units (e.g., “How many spoons tall?”).
  • Skills: Comparing, measuring, problem-solving.

4. Sorting Challenge

  • Purpose: Develop sorting and pattern skills.
  • Activity:
    • Collect a mix of household items (buttons, socks, toys).
    • Sort by colour, size, or type.
    • Extension: Make a repeating pattern (e.g., red-blue-red-blue).
  • Skills: Sorting, pattern recognition, reasoning.

5. Snack Time Maths

  • Purpose: Counting and sharing fairly.
  • Activity:
    • Use fruit or crackers.
    • Ask your child to count how many pieces they have.
    • Share equally between family members (“How many each if we have 10 pieces and 2 people?”).
  • Skills: Counting, division, problem-solving.

Activity 5 - Reasoning task (this is super fun!!) 

Activity: “Who Ate the Most Biscuits?”

Purpose: Develop reasoning, comparison, and problem-solving skills.


Instructions

  1. Tell your child this story:

    “Three friends – Ceri, Dafydd, and Megan – had some biscuits.
    Ceri ate 2 more than Dafydd.
    Megan ate 1 less than Dafydd.
    Altogether, they ate 13 biscuits.
    How many did each person eat?”

  2. What to do:

    • Encourage your child to think aloud and explain their reasoning.
    • Use counters, coins, or pieces of paper to represent biscuits.
    • Let them try different combinations until they find the correct answer.

Skills Developed

  • Logical reasoning
  • Addition and subtraction
  • Problem-solving strategies
  • Explaining thinking (oracy linked to maths)

Extension Ideas:

  • Change the total number of biscuits (e.g., 15 or 20).
  • Add another friend with a clue (e.g., “Rhys ate twice as many as Megan”).
  • Ask your child to make up their own biscuit problem for you to solve!

Activity 5 - Autumn Walk - 

🍂 Autumn Maths Trail: Woodland Wonders

Objective: Use maths skills to explore and record data during an autumn walk.

Materials Needed:

  • Clipboard or notebook
  • Pencil
  • Ruler or measuring tape
  • Optional: camera or tablet for photos

🌳 Maths Challenges Along the Trail

  1. Leaf Length Estimation & Measurement

    • Find 5 different leaves.
    • Estimate their length in cm.
    • Measure each leaf and record the actual length.
    • Calculate the difference between your estimate and the actual measurement.
  2. Tree Height Estimation

    • Choose a tall tree.
    • Estimate its height.
    • Use a partner and a metre stick to try a simple method (e.g., similar triangles or shadow length comparison).
    • Record your method and result.
  3. Counting & Multiplying

    • Count how many acorns, conkers, or pinecones you can find in 2 minutes.
    • If each pupil finds the same amount, how many would the whole class collect?
  4. Symmetry Spotting

    • Find natural objects (leaves, flowers, etc.) with lines of symmetry.
    • Draw or describe them.
    • How many lines of symmetry does each have?
  5. Data Collection & Graphing

    • Record how many of each type of leaf you find (oak, maple, etc.).
    • Create a bar chart or pictogram when you return to class.
  6. Angles in Nature

    • Use a protractor to measure angles in branches or leaf stems.
    • Estimate first, then measure.

🧠 Extension Questions

  • What patterns do you notice in the shapes or sizes of leaves?
  • Can you create a maths problem using something you found on the walk?
  • How would the data change if you did this walk in summer or winter?
