Literacy Home Learning Tasks R/1

1. Oracy Task – “What Can You See?” Journey Talk

Objective: Develop speaking and listening skills.

Activity:

  • Ask your child to imagine they are going on a journey (by train, bus, or car).
  • Prompt them with questions like:
    • “What do you see out of the window?”
    • “Where are you going?”
    • “What sounds can you hear?”
  • Encourage them to describe their journey using their senses to help them.
  • You can record their story or act it out with toys or props.

2. Writing Task – “My Journey Story”

Objective: Practice early writing and mark-making.

Activity:

  • Ask your child to draw a picture of their imagined journey.
  • Support them in writing a simple sentence underneath, e.g., “I saw a big dog.”
  • Use sound mats or phonics cards to help them spell words phonetically.
  • Celebrate their writing by displaying it or sharing it with family.

3. Reading Task – “Rhyme Time with Rhyming Books”

Objective: Build phonological awareness and reading confidence.

Books to Use:

  • Oi Frog! by Kes Gray
  • Shark in the Park by Nick Sharratt
  • Each Peach Pear Plum by Janet and Allan Ahlberg
  • Fox in Socks by Dr. Seuss

Activity:

  • Choose one rhyming book each day.
  • As you read, pause and let your child guess the rhyming word.
  • Play a “rhyme match” game: say a word from the book and ask your child to find a rhyming word (real or made-up!).

4. Sequencing Task – “Story Steps”

Objective: Develop comprehension and sequencing skills.

Activity:

  • Choose a rhyming story with a clear sequence (e.g., Shark in the Park).
  • Print or draw simple pictures from key moments in the story.
  • Mix them up and ask your child to put them in the correct order.
  • Encourage them to retell the story using the pictures.

5. Creative Literacy Task – “Make Your Own Rhyming Book”

Objective: Combine creativity, phonics, and storytelling.

Activity:

  • Fold paper to make a mini-book.
  • Help your child choose a theme (e.g., animals, vehicles, food).
  • On each page, write a simple rhyming sentence together, e.g., “A cat in a hat sat on a mat.”
  • Let them illustrate each page.
  • Read their book aloud together and share it with family or friends.

Activity 5 - Autumn Walk -

🍂 Autumn Maths Trail: Woodland Wonders

Objective: Use maths skills to explore and record data during an autumn walk.

Materials Needed:

  • Clipboard or notebook
  • Pencil
  • Ruler or measuring tape
  • Optional: camera or tablet for photos

🌳 Maths Challenges Along the Trail

  1. Leaf Length Estimation & Measurement

    • Find 5 different leaves.
    • Estimate their length in cm.
    • Measure each leaf and record the actual length.
    • Calculate the difference between your estimate and the actual measurement.
  2. Tree Height Estimation

    • Choose a tall tree.
    • Estimate its height.
    • Use a partner and a metre stick to try a simple method (e.g., similar triangles or shadow length comparison).
    • Record your method and result.
  3. Counting & Multiplying

    • Count how many acorns, conkers, or pinecones you can find in 2 minutes.
    • If each pupil finds the same amount, how many would the whole class collect?
  4. Symmetry Spotting

    • Find natural objects (leaves, flowers, etc.) with lines of symmetry.
    • Draw or describe them.
    • How many lines of symmetry does each have?
  5. Data Collection & Graphing

    • Record how many of each type of leaf you find (oak, maple, etc.).
    • Create a bar chart or pictogram when you return to class.
  6. Angles in Nature

    • Use a protractor to measure angles in branches or leaf stems.
    • Estimate first, then measure.

🧠 Extension Questions

  • What patterns do you notice in the shapes or sizes of leaves?
  • Can you create a maths problem using something you found on the walk?
  • How would the data change if you did this walk in summer or winter?
